Job Title: PHP Developer
Opia are a market-leading risk managed sales promotion agency. We work with blue-chip clients to develop, launch, and run sales promotions on the international stage.
Our in-house team of developers, located in Gateshead, work on a variety of applications delivered for some of the world’s leading brands including Microsoft, HP, Samsung, Exxon Mobil, and more.
Having been acquired by billion-dollar Village Roadshow Group in 2015, we’re continuing to expand, and need new developers to help keep up with the growing business.
We’re looking for an experienced PHP developer to join our back-end development team. This team develops all the internal platforms and APIs which support our other development team and the wider business.
You can expect to work on a wide variety of projects, ranging from financial payment and reporting systems, to optical character recognition and logistics solutions. Given the nature of these systems we have a focus on quality, which drives our culture of high quality, automated testing, continuous delivery, and high availability.
You'll be given the creative freedom to bring your own ideas and solutions to the table. You won’t just be given pre-defined solutions to implement, you’ll be given the business goals and will work together with the team to design the best solution.
The essentials you should have experience with include:
- PHP (inc. PHP 7.x)
- MySQL, Postgres, or other SQL databases
- Object oriented design principles
- Unit testing in PHP
- Linux (Debian)
- Modern PHP frameworks, and the PHP FIG
- Vagrant or Docker
Experience with the below would be advantageous, but not essential:
- Good understanding of HTTP and APIs
- Queues and worker processes in PHP
- Web application security
- IaaS (AWS or Rackspace)
- Continuous integration/delivery
- Docker orchestration tools (eg. Kubernetes, Mesos, Rancher)
- Microservice architectures
We’re open to remote working. Most of the technical team work in our Newcastle office, but we also have another office in London, and we have a few full-time remote developers.
Our development teams include experts in every aspect of software engineering, who you’ll be able to learn from and bounce ideas off.
We understand as a team that your learning is never finished, which is why we sponsor local developer meetups (PHP North East) and encourage everyone in the team to present new ideas and technology to the team during regular internal presentations.
